Gerrit du Toit laughed and greeted me friendly with a firm handshake on my arrival at the Oppie Oewer Adventures and Chalets, situated on a well-groomed plot, just outside Tzaneen
“Yes, this is the best kept secret in Tzaneen!”,
I followed him into the main house onto the large deck and could immediately see why Gerrit and his wife Alta, is willing to share their privacy with co-adventure and nature enthusiasts.
The huge deck is where everything happens when guests are not out on a tour.
The breath-taking view of the Letaba River just meters below the house, the lush foliage with profound birdlife and the late afternoon sun filtering through the vast riverine vegetation, sets the perfect backdrop where guests can make themselves at home in the rustic log cabin environment.
Probably the main attraction is the bikers-bar which is stocked with all the old favourites and lots of memorabilia and photos which could spark up any conversation and keep it going way into the early hours of the next morning.
The huge teak dining table, comfortable lounge area with gas and wood burn braai, provides the ideal facility to treat guests to memorable breakfast and dinner experiences.
Informal fully equipped, airconditioned log cabins and a camping site offers comfortable accommodation options to guests, two en- suite units for two, one en-suite unit for three guests and one self-catering unit which accommodates four guests can be booked. Breakfast are prepared and served by hostess, Alta du Toit and only the freshest produce can be expected from the fruitful Tzaneen area!
Being inhabitants for almost half a century Gerrit and Alta du Toit are known for their knowledge and passion for the beautiful Tzaneen area.
In 2012 they decided to offer this unique experience to motorbike enthusiasts who also share an appreciation for the natural environment and started Oppie Oewer Adventures.
Tailormade guided tours can be arranged for five to twenty guests, all inclusive, day or weekend trips, and bikers can decide which routes they want to explore-
Exciting options are scenic and challenging routes, for duel sport bikes through the misty Magoebaskloof area, Georges Valley, the remote Wolkberg area which is well known for its rare indigenous vegetation, the Lekgalametsi area which is very popular for birding enthusiasts to the Matlo Mohlaputsi valley where overnight facilities can be arranged.
Distances between 140 km to 290 km can be done per day, and picnics, meals and sundowner stops can be included to add a special touch to this unforgettable experience.
Since these tours may frequently vary, no fixed rates are available, and clients can contact Gerrit for a quotation.
According to Gerrit, no other area can compare with the spectacular viewpoints, safe route options, natural environment with lots of water, indigenous forests and ideal climate through- out the year than the Tzaneen area.
So, if you are an adventurous biker, biker couple or biker family, and you appreciate good food and interesting company, contact Gerrit du Toit for your next biking adventure in Tzaneen, Limpopo
