Love a juicy steak but your spouse is a pescatarian? That’s not a problem at all if you’re in Potchefstroom. Sister restaurants Beef Boys and Fish at Fine Things have you both covered.
Located in the Cachet Park center in the heart of Die Bult, Beef Boys is a traditional South African steakhouse opened in 2002 by co-owners Jaco Bosman and Maurice Wessels. The Beef Boys restaurant is everything you’d expect — dark wood interior, big bar, neon beer and wine signs scattered throughout. Beef Boys is noisy and incredibly busy, event on winter weeknights during the university’s student holidays.
Most importantly, Beef Boys has a huge menu with lots and lots of meat. Sirloin, rump, fillet, T-bone, or rib-eye — cooked to order and served with a variety of sauces, rubs, and sides — Beef Boys has it all. Beef Boys also offers a large variety of pork, chicken and lamb dishes (the pork neck steak comes highly recommended), burgers and mixed grills, and a lengthy beer and wine menu. If you’re really starving Beef Boys also has an extensive selection of starters, including chicken livers, jalapeño poppers, garlic snails, and the “Blooming Onion” (made famous by the American chain Outback Steakhouse, which Beef Boys resembles).
Not in the mood for land-based meat? Then simply flip the Beef Boys menu over and peruse the offerings from Fish at Fine Things, the seafood restaurant next door that is under the same ownership. Fish at Fine things has all the seafood favorites — hake, sole, kingklip, prawns, calamari, and endless combinations of all of the above. The grilled hake and calamari pairs perfectly with sweet potato mash and broccoli with cheese sauce. Don’t forget to douse it all with tangy lemon butter.
Fish at Fine things has the same arrangement as Beef Boys, in which both menus are available. Fish at Fine things also has the added perk of a breakfast menu, serving eggs, bacon, flapjacks, and all the usual morning suspects.
Beef Boys and Fish at Fine Things sit adjacent to one another in Cachet Park. Both have plenty of outdoor seating, although Fish at Fine Things offers a particularly substantial number of outdoor tables when the weather is nice. For a family dinner with multiple picky eaters, Beef Boys and Fish at Fine Things are the best choice — if not the only choice — in Potchefstroom.
