The Locrate Market is Soweto’s top food, craft, and design market, happening on the first Sunday every month. Locrate is where Soweto’s cool kids go to hang out, listen to music, sip craft beer and South African wine, browse clothing and art, listen to poetry, and eat delicious, locally made food. While the Locrate Market’s location used to vary, it now takes place each month on the grounds of Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers in Orlando West.
Short for “Local Creative”, Locrate was founded in 2014 by Soweto locals Sfiso Dlangamandla and Kgosi Rampa with the goal of helping Joburg entrepreneurs to create, develop, and promote their own brands. While Locrate’s offerings vary from month to month, the market usually features: top local bands and deejays; a children’s play area; a large selection of food, drink, and fresh produce; and fun activities like karaoke. The market starts at mid-day and runs until late in the evening.
In addition to the Soweto market, Locrate hosts a variety of other festivals and events around Joburg. Follow the Locrate Market on Facebook for regular announcements. The next Soweto market is on 5 May 2019.
The Locrate Market takes place on the first Sunday of every month (February through November) at 10823A Pooe Street, Orlando West, Soweto. Call 071-996-0080.
