The Louis Changuion Hiking Trail lies in the northern most part of the Drakensberg escarpment of the Limpopo Province. This trail seeks to raise awareness and appreciation of a 240-ha stretch of afromontane grassland.
A group of about 10 local residents have divided up the trail to keep it clear of growth and to remove alien plants which have spread into it. However, we need people to use it and to promote it more widely.
1) Your feet trampling on the path will mean that we have less clearing work to do.
2) The trail traverses natural grassland and indigenous forest. Numerous endemic and threatened plants occur here. A wildflowers poster, medicinal plant booklet and an insect booklet are available for those wishing to brush up on their indigenous natural knowledge.
3) It is about 10km in length, takes about 4hours, and has stunning views and quaint picnic spots.
4) Some threatened fauna that may be seen along the hike are the Blue Swallow, Methuens Dwarf Gecko and the Wolkberg Zulu Butterfly.
5) There are beautiful views of the Wolkberg Wilderness area, the Iron Crown and the Ebenezer Dam.
6) The walk goes past a bubbling brook, two natural springs and two rhino rubbing rocks.
7) A beautiful graveyard dating back to 1897 with some eccentric inscriptions.
8) As this hike normally takes about three and half hours it would be ideal for those with children who want to get back into hiking or those who want to take a relaxed walk and smell the flowers along the way.
9) Those wanting to do a second short hike could do the Lesodi Trail through indigenous forest which starts next to the Magoebaskloof Hotel and again takes about three hours. This forest has numerous amazing strangler figs and a must see for tree lovers is the Cathedral Tree. The rare Samango monkey is actually fed at the Hotel so it is very likely that you may see a troop. Plus there are Narina Trogon and Cape Parrot lurking around.
10) The Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail into the Woodbush Forest is also great for a couple of days walking.
11) A map of the Louis Changuion Trail and education materials are available from the Tourism Magoebaskloof office.
12) Entry is free
