The Peregrine Farm Stall, about 30 minutes’ drive west of Hermanus on the N2 highway, has all the convenience of your average Engen 1-Stop. Yet Peregrine is absolutely not an average South African rest area. You won’t find a Steers, a Wimpy or an express Woolworth’s at Peregrine, but you will find fresh, locally sourced food, excellent service, and an exceedingly pleasant environment to stop off for breakfast or lunch on your way to a weekend holiday. As Peregrine’s website notes, the word “peregrinate” means “to travel” and the Peregrine Farm Stall is a true treasure trove for travelers.
Opened more than 50 years ago in 1964, Peregrine includes a café, a bakery, and a shop selling mostly local food products. The café is spacious and delightful, with shady outdoor seating for warm weather and gas heaters inside for chilly mornings. The menu includes delicious breakfasts, including the best smashed avo on toast, topped with delicately poached eggs, that you will ever taste. Lunch options range from Peregrine’s famous pies — filled with chicken, venison, steak and kidney, or spanakopita for vegetarians — to quiches, bobotie, and bratwurst. The breads are freshly baked and artisanal. Peregrine offers numerous vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as gluten-free items.
The shop (also referred to as the Farm Stall) is filled with locally sourced snacks, breads, baked goods, jams, and other treats, as well as a selection of Elgin Valley wines and craft beers. Peregrine also has an outdoor stand selling take-away and coffee and snacks for those on the go.
In short, there is no better place on the N2 than Peregrine to stop off on the way to Hermanus. It will be a great start to the trip.
