Nelspruit

The city was founded in 1895 by three brothers of the Nel family who grazed their cattle around the site in the winter months.

During the Boer War, Nelspruit served briefly as the seat of government for the South African Republic, an independent Boer republic (not to be confused with the Republic of South Africa).

Birds of Eden and Monkeyland

Birds of Eden is the world's largest free flight aviary and bird sanctuary, located in Kurland village near Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape, South Africa. The mesh dome of the sanctuary was built over 2.3 hectares (5.7 acres) of indigenous forest, and is up to 55 metres (180 ft) above ground level. The unique two hectare dome (the World’s largest) spans over a gorge of indigenous forest. The sanctuary has its own mysterious ruin, which incorporates a walk-behind waterfall.

Knysna Heads

Dit is ongelooflik mooi om daar bo te staan en die natuurwonder te aanskou.

Separated by around 300 metres of water, The Knysna Heads are the headlands of two peninsulas that enclose and form the Knysna River Estuary. Formed over geological time beginning as far back as the break-up of the supercontinent, Gondwana, during the Jurassic, 180 million years ago. the Knysna Heads can be described as the rocky headlands at the western and eastern ends of the two peninsulas that embrace and define the Knysna basin. They also frame the Knysna Estuary’s only entrance to the sea.

Tokara, the acclaimed family wine and olive estate, has earned its place as a sought after, all-encompassing Stellenbosch destination with a listing in the prestigious World’s Best Vineyards Top 50 2022.

One of three South African wine farms to make the Top 50 list this year, Tokara, ranked 47th, shares the distinction with Creation (38th) and Klein Constantia (39th). Italy tops the 2022 list with Antinori nel Chianti Classico in Tuscany taking the number one spot.

Pilgrim's Rest

I visited Pilgrim's Rest on Sunday. It was judged to be best town in Mpumalanga in the Kyknet Kwêla competition. It is really looking lovely again, houses painted, streets clean. Picnic area near bridge with neat lawn. I even saw a tourist bus. The lads who clean one's car without permission are a nuisance. Road going down from grasskop is ok, but road to Chrystal Springs Resort has some potholes when going up.
